No Time Wasted
I miss creating fun videos, like the product reviews and how-to’s I used to make for YouTube. There’s something freeing about being creative and making something, such as a video, from start to finish.
Nowadays we have it made. We can post something for the world to see and all we need is a smartphone. Our voices can be heard much easier than generations before us—which is both good and bad. Some of us want to create something meaningful that people will want to engage with. No A.I., just humans creating.
I’ve longed to create more videos lately, but as I am a perfectionist, it inhibits any motivation. If you can’t ever get something to be perfect, then you’ll never want to make it happen. So, how do I get out of this slump and start creating videos again?
In the words of Shia LaBeouf—just do it! Just create what you can and post it. You’re in a crappy shooting environment that’s less than ideal? Who cares, shoot in that environment anyway. Not the best equipment? You don’t need the best. Shoot anyway.
I’m giving advice that I don’t even follow myself, but I know it’s all true. My current living situation makes it incredibly hard to film the style of videos in which I’d like to create. I shouldn’t use that as an excuse though. Many people have made masterpieces with less. I keep thinking, “well, when I move, then it’ll be easier to film in my new place,” but that’s months from now. Months that I could spend getting better at scripting, shooting, and editing.
Time wasted.
My current environment does make it next to impossible to shoot. So, instead I decided to blog—another creative outlet to let me spread my wings a bit, ya know? So, for the foreseeable future, I will be writing and posting to this blog (hopefully) often. I plan on writing what I wish I could film, and then I can turn the blog posts into videos at a later time. Best of both worlds, right?
I used to want to make every sentence perfect when it came to writing, but it’s almost as if mistakes are more sought after nowadays due to generative A.I. writing everything. People want to know it’s been written by a human. That doesn’t mean I won’t proofread what I write, but if it’s not sentence-by-sentence perfect like I typically desire it to be, I won’t spend time revising it endlessly.
So here we are, writing my first blog post in who knows how long. If you’ve read this far, I hope you continue to read what I publish in the future.
Join me on my journey, it’s too scary to go it alone.
